- Course objectives
- The course expands the subject matter of the course Introduction to the Study of Religions. The seminars concentrate on key problems of the academic study of Religions that are mentioned in the Introduction, but cannot be (due to the limited time) exhaustively discussed. Seminars concern both practical problems of scientific work (citation systems, bibliographies, instruction about libraries, scientific journals, electronic resources etc.) and actual questions of theory, methodology and terminology of the Study of Religion.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
After the successful completion of the course students should:
- understand differences between scientific Study of Religions and theology and know the position of the Study of Religions among related scientific subject fields
- be able to read critically our historical sources as well as scientific texts and to interpret them accordingly
- know the terminology used in the Study of Religions and basic rules of the academic writing - Syllabus
- The course is taught in two seminar groups (alternately in odd and even weeks) 0. Introductory Instructions; Seminar 1. Formal Requirements of Academic Writing; Seminar 2. Practical Problems of Scientific Work: Bibliography and Processing of Information; Seminar 3. Scientific Study of Religions and Theology; Seminar 4. Definitions of Religion; Seminar 5. Typology of Religions; Seminar 6. Hermeneutics and Phenomenology of Religion.

- Contents of the semester:
Seminars and class discussions. Reading of texts concerning themes of individual seminars is required.
Conditions for the successful completion of the course:
1) sufficient attendance at seminars (5 from 6); 2) in time submission of 4 position papers (from seminar 3 up to seminar 6). - Language of instruction
