Course objectives
The workshop is aimed at the military history of ancient states. Students at the end of this course will be able to focus on military history of ancient states, as well as in kits and equipment, tactics and strategies, major battles, and social status of soldiers in the various social groups. Students will also be able to interpret material from sources of weapons, armor and defensive structures.
Syllabus
  • 1. Úvod a seznámení s literaturou
  • 2. Egypt, Mezopotámie a Persie (do řecko - perských válek), počátek řeckého vojenství (rozbor řecké mytologie a Homérovy Iliady).
  • 3. Řecké námořnictvo, Sparta a Athény, postavení vojska v řecké společnosti, řecké obléhací stroje a obranná technika.
  • 4. Řecko - perské války (bitva u Thermopyl), Alexander Veliký a jeho tažení (bitva u Graníku).
  • 5. Řekové na území Itálie, Etruskové a počátek římské republiky. Výstroj a výzbroj Římanů.
  • 6. Římská taktika a strategie v období republiky do Mariových reforem, Kartágo (punské války).
  • 7. Římské obléhací stroje, obranné stavby, společenské uspořádání, Mariova reforma římského vojenství.
  • 8. Pozdní Persie (Parthie a bitva u Karrh, Sasánovská říše), Caesar, krize římské republiky (bitva u Mutiny, Farsálu, Filipp a Actia).
  • 9. Proměna římského vojenství na počátku principátu (římská expanze na území dnešní Velké Británie),Vespasianus a Titus - potlačení židovského povstání, císař Traianus a Hadrianus a jejich expanzivní politika.
  • 10. Germáni, Hunové a pozdně římské vojenství. Shrnutí.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of seminars. The seminar included lectures, working wit czech translated of ancient sources, samples of material sources.
