- Course objectives
- The course is designed to develop the skills in reading and writing basic Japanese. No prior knowledge of written Japanese is required. The course starts with the introduction of hiragana and katakana, approximately 50 kanji will also be introduced during the semester. Students will be able to read and write Japanese on simple everyday topics at the end of the course.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define all characters of hiragana and katakana and approx. 50 kanji characters;
explain the usage of learned characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese texts;
apply the knowledge of the characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese words and sentences;
inspect the correctness of transcription of simple Japanese text;
formulate and write down elementary sentences;
assess the usage of learned characters in writing and transcribing simple texts. - Syllabus

- 1. Introduction to Japanese writing system, hiragana: a-ko;
- 2. Exercise in reading and writing, hiragana: sa-to;
- 3. Exercise in reading and writing, hiragana: na-ho;

- 5. Exercise in reading and writing, voiced and half-voiced sounds, double consonants, hiragana: wa-n;
- 6. Double vowels, combined sounds, exercises, review of hiragana;
- 7. Exercise in reading and writing, katakana: a-ko, selected kanji;
- 8. Exercise in reading and writing, katakana: sa-to, selected kanji;
