Course objectives
The objective of the course consists in further development of basic knowledge of spoken Japanese. All students who intend to enroll to the course should be able to read hiragana, katakana and some basic kanji (approx. 50). The course aims at the development of speaking and listening skills. Hiragana and katakana will be used throughout the course. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to adequately handle basic conversation in Japanese.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define the principles of constructing Japanese sentences;
translate the meaning of Japanese sentences;
apply learned vocabulary, grammatical rules and sentence patterns in practical communication;
distinguish categories of Japanese grammar;
construct sentences in Japanese;
judge the accuracy of applying learned grammatical rules, vocabulary and sentence patterns in different life situations.

  • 0. Introduction to the course;
  • 1. Review of the course JAPX111 Japanese language II;
  • 2. Review of adjectives, writing short letters and postcards, particles “kara” and “made”, vocabulary;
  • 3. “Te” form of verbs, describing two simultaneous actions, vocabulary;
  • 4. Directions, describing actions in progress;
  • 5. Describing persons, counting persons, complex sentences, vocabulary;
  • 6. Purpose of an action, short form of verbs and adjectives – its usage;
  • 7. “Nanika” and “nanimo, particle “ga”, counting small items, vocabulary;
  • 8. Short form of verbs and adjectives – past tense;
  • 9. Qualifying nouns with verbs and adjectives , vocabulary;
  • 10. Comparison, planning;
  • 11. Conversation exercise;
  • 12. Final review.

Teaching methods
Lectures – theoretical introduction, written exercises, listening exercises, conversation training.
Assessment methods
Final written test (score 80% or higher on the final exam). Students are expected and required to attend seminar classes of this course.
