- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to help students to cope with disparity between how little we know about China and its contemporary society and how much of our lives is and will be influenced by this culturally and geographically distant country. At the end of this course, students have a basic overview of the current political and social situation in PRC; understands and can explain historical development of China in 20th century; with the base of the acquired knowledge students can interpret fragmentary and often contradictory information from Western media; at the end of the course students will be able to discuss contemporary China without slipping to ethnocentric cliches and media's simplifying of the complex issue

- Section A. Language, culture and history:
- 1. Introduction to Chinese language and culture
- 2. Diversity of China - in nationality, ethnicity, languages, socio-economics, religions, food culture etc.
- 3. Chinese history in reverse II. - (2012-1981)
- 4. Chinese history in reverse II. - (1976-1861)
- Section B. Crucial political, social and economical issues of contemporary China :
- 5. Internal affairs - political system, media and the control, ethno politics in PRC
- 6. International affairs - Tibet, Taiwan, Japan, USA, Africa
- 7. Social issues I. - Chinese family, demographic policy, education, migration
- 8. Social issues II. - migration, labor issues, welfare system, enviromental problems
- 9. Ekonomical issues - energetics, land ownership, China as a “world's sweatshop”, coruption and bussines etique
- 10. Religion in China and religious policy
- 11. Cultural boom in contemporary China - arts, architecture, cinematography, literature
- 12. Disscusion - universal human rights versus "Chinese path"
