- Course objectives
- The course deals with characteristic features of the process of forming of modern Balkan nations and states in key historical moments of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Students get acquainted with major historical facts and national personalities. Through a comparative method they also learn to recognise general features of the nationbuilding process in the Balkans and its common as well as specific traits with respect to the rest of Europe. They should be able to comprehend historical conditionality of the Balkan nationalisms, which often manifest themselves even today.

- 1. Introduction (models of a nation-forming process in Western and Central Europe at the turn of the 19th century, specific features of the process in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans);

- 3. Greeks, Greece (Greek Uprising of 1821–1829);
- 4. Croats (Illyrian Movement, Revolutionary years 1848/1849);
- 5. Slovenes (1848/1849 – beginning of 1870s);
- 6. Romanians, Romania (the unification of Wallachia and Moldavia, 1850s–1860s);

- Teaching methods
- The course consists of a two-hour lecture and a two-hour seminar, which focuses on major national and political programmes of particular Balkan nations in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
- Assessment methods
- Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (at least two thirds of classes), handing in an essay and participation in class discussion. Oral exam concentrates on the student’s knowledge of the subject matter as well as the relevant literature.
