- Good orientation in greek and roman art would be welcome. The course is suitable for students of Classical archaeology, Medieval archaeology, History of religions, Art history and for those, who want to be acquainted with the transformation of the antiquity into christianism in the field of arts.

- Course objectives
- At the end of this course students should be able to understand the principles of early christian art which had resulted from the context of previous art of greek and roman pagan Antiquity and of its language. They should be acquainted with the early christian iconography, art of catacombs, with iconography of sarcophagi, architecture and mosaic decoration of early christian churches to the seventh century A. D.
- Syllabus
- origins of early christian art and its specific formation based on the greek and roman pagan art
- Iconophobia of early church and its limits in the world of Antiquity, evidences at Dura Europos
- origins of specific iconography based upon pagan models
- symbolic language of art in the roman catacombs
- iconography of sarcophagy and signification of their decoration style and technology of production of the sarcophagi
- architecture of christian churches and its decoration typology of churches and their conservation
- painting and mosaics in churches of 4th bis to 7th century
- early christian art and its function into the final romanisation of christianity interactions between the pagan and christian world
