Course objectives
The students get acquainted with the beginnings of the history of the German literature during the first term. German period – Gothic translation of the Bible, the eldest period – runes, runic inscriptions and invoking formulas, heroic poetry – forming of the Frank Empire, culture and literature of the period of Charles the Great – first lyric and epic literary works of the old German period (8th and 9th century), religious literature of the 11th century.

  • - Main works of the 9th century (Evangelical harmony)
  • - Old- Saxon Genesis, Heliand, short characteristics of both works
  • - Wessobrun Prayer, short characteristics
  • - Muspilli, short characteristics
  • - Evangelic harmony by Otfrid von Weissenburg, contents, notes on Otfrid, his sphere and range of activities and his importance for Old-German literature.

  • - Old Marian poetry on the example of Melk Marian song
