Course objectives
1. Having completed the course, students will be able to compare and evaluate individual translations and multiple translation versions of literary works from Anglophone America and their paratext background, in the context of:
- changing translation norms (especially with respect to culture-related phenomena);
- previous translation versions (in terms of both links and contrasts);
- editorial practices;
- communication of cultural values;
- communication of aesthetic literary values and style; - gender perspective etc.
and will be able to extend this skill to texts from other cultural areas.
2. They will have enhanced their skill at selecting and modulating parameters of their own translations and communicate about these effectively with the other participants of the translation process.
3. They will have an awareness of the most important translators who have contributed to the body of translations from American and Canadian literature into Czech.

  • The contexts listed under Course objectives will be applied to single or multiple (where available) published translation versions of writings by the authors listed below (one author per seminar) to form a patchwork of considerations for the student of culture and/or translator:

  • 25. J. Kincaid: The Autobiography of My Mother
  • 26. A topic to be selected (drama/poetry), course conclusion
Teaching methods
Translation analysis, guided discussion (groups and whole class), own translation, written translation criticism, paratext analysis.
Assessment methods
Preparation for class (30%), participation in discussion (30%), essay (40%).
