- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with diverse relationship between religions and medicine focusing primarily on the second half of the 20th and begining of 21th century. In this time spiritual concepts of health and disease returns in secular body car. In the end of the course students should be able to recognize both mainstream forms of alternative medicine as well as other less obvious forms of alternative medicine such as alternative diets, selfmonitoring or balneotherapy. Students should know the historical background, main principles and wider context of discuss streams of alternative medicine. During the course students will be introduced with critique of alternative medicine as doctors as well as the general public.

- 1. The Introduction - Introduction to the issues of history of alternative medicine and basic characteristic of alternative medicine 2. The Critique of alternative medicine - Alternative medicine and doctors and their critique, club of czech skeptics Sysifos Commentary: KŘÍŽOVÁ, e., Alternativní medicína jako problém, Praha: Karolinum 2004, str. 13 - 82. 3. The history of the relationship between medicine and religions - Antiquity, judaism, islam, christianity, modern times and 19th century 4. Homeopathy and its branches - history and main principles of homeopathy, homeopathy in Czech Republic, autopatie, Bach flower essences, aromatherapy 5. Asian export - traditional chinese medicine and its history and main principles, acupuncture in Czech Republic, ayurveda and its main principles 6. Biotronics - its history, main characters of czech biotronics, 7. Body and health in New Age - basic characteristic of New Age, notions of body, health and illnessis in New Age, ussed healing techniques in New Age Commentary: CAPRA, F., Bod obratu, Praha: Dharmagaia 2002, Biomedicínský model. 8. Human potential movement - basic characteristic of human potential movement, healing techniques, reiki, scientology, Christian science 9. Meating with the sympathizer with alternative medicine 10. Balneotherapy - methods of balneotherapy, balneotherapy in Czech Republic 11. Alternative nutritional guidelines with overlap in the health - vitarianism, paleo diet, whole 30 12. Selfmonitoring as a new approach to the health - what can be measured, wearable technologies
- Teaching methods
- The course will be taught through lectures. Part of the course will be discusions on texts. Students also meets with the sympathizer of alternative medicine. Kurz bude ukončen testem ověřujícím základní znalosti probíraného tématu. Za test mohou studenti získat maximálně 100 bodů a hranicí pro úspěšné splnění testu je 60 bodů. Aby byl student připuštěn k závěrečnému testu, musí v průběhu semestru odevzdat dva komentáře na zadané texty. Za každý komentář může student získat maximálně 50 bodů a dohromady za komentáře musí získat minimálně 60 bodů, aby byl připuštěn k závěrečnému testu.
- Assessment methods
- The course will be finished with test, that verify basic knowledge of the discused topics. Maximum of this test is 100 points. The threshold for the successful completion of the test is 60 points.
