- Course objectives
- The course aims to familiarize students with specific, pattern and method of legal translation on the basis of modern legal linguistics, sciences of the terms and translation. Complete scientific understanding of the Ukrainian legal terminology in the European context will help future translators of legal literature, not only in the selection of bilingual legal terminology equivalents concepts, but also in the ensuring authentic translation of legal texts according to their genre and functional style specifics, the message recipients, the typical types of interference as possible causes of the translation errors.
- Syllabus
- 1. Actual problems of legal terminology in the context of European integration and inter-language interaction. Term and word. Terms and concepts. The relationship between the legal phenomenon, the legal concept and term. General requirements for the terms in legal texts.
- 2. Ukrainian Legal Terminology, its genesis, the source of replenishment and development prospects. Interaction of national and international elements in the process of forming a legal dictionary. Internationalization of modern legal terminological system.
- 3. Productive method of legal terms formation in the Ukrainian language. Problems streamlining, unification and standardization of modern legal terminology. Their role in ensuring the effectiveness work of codification work and practice of law at the EU and Ukraine.
- 4. Terms of legislation and legislative definitions issues. Rules for constructing definitions of terms and typical examples of violations.
- 5. The phenomena of synonymy, variability and omonimiyi in the legal terminology. Complicated cases of the use of terms.
- 6. Methods of language and processing, editing and linguistic expertise of the legal texts. Regulatory and incorrect usage in legal writing and speech. Analysis and classification errors. Legal translation and terminological competence of the translator.
