Course objectives
This course will outline different methods in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). CDA is broadly concerned with the way that language and other semiotic modalities reflect, legitimate and instantiate power and inequality in social relations. In this course, students will be introduced to three broad approaches to CDA: (i) ‘traditional’ approaches inspired by Systemic Functional Grammar; (ii) approaches drawing on Cognitive Linguistics; and (iii) functional and cognitive approaches to multimodal discourse. A variety of discourses articulated in talk, text and image and operating across a range of social and political fields of action are considered, including discourses of race, immigration, war, national identity, political protest, and corporate responsibility. In the final session, students will be encouraged to discuss issues and ideas in designing a CDA project.

Teaching methods
The course will be co-taught by two experts in the field: Christopher Hart (Lancaster University) and Wei-lun Lu (Masaryk University). Nine sessions will be lectures given by Dr. Hart and two sessions will be mid-term student presentation and discussion led by Dr. Lu. The final presentation will be in the exam period.
Assessment methods
A three-page (min.) CDA analysis (20%)
5 assignments (10% * 5 = 50%)
Mid-term and final presentation (15% * 2 = 30%)
