Course objectives
This course is an introduction to cognitive approaches to literary analysis. In this course, we cover basic issues such as metaphor, deixis and reference in literature and translation of literary texts. After the course, students will be able to conduct a simple cognitive analysis of literary texts and/or their translations.

Teaching methods
The course is co-taught by four experts in the field, including Barbara Dancygier (University of British Columbia), Elzbieta Tabakowska (Jagiellonian University), Svitlana Shurma (National Aviation University), Wei-lun Lu (Masaryk University). Eight sessions will be lectures by scholars (Shurma, Dancygier, Tabakowska) and two sessions mid-term presentation and discussion led by Lu. The final presentation will be in the exam period.
Assessment methods
A three-page (min.) linguistic analysis of a literary piece (20%) 5 assignments (10% * 5 = 50%) Mid-term and final presentation (15% * 2 = 30%)
