- Course objectives
- Students will master an overview of significant schools of thought, figures, and works of the history of the individual national literatures (Greek, Roman, English, American, German, Scandinavian, French, Russian, and Polish) – from classical antiquity to the Enlightenment (Selective survey of world literature I, spring 2015) and from the Enlightenment to 1945 (Selective survey of world literature II, autumn 2015). The newly acquired knowledge will enhance the students’ understanding of the significance of world literature for the development of Czech literature in the Central European cultural area.

- 1. A survey of Russian romantic literature of the 19th century 2. The Manuscripts of Dvůr Králové and of Zelená Hora in the context of inspirations in other languages 3. 19th century Polish literature – different forms of romanticism and realism 4. Johann Wolfgang Goethe and his times. Romanticism in German literature 5. The Victorian era: 1837-1901 in English literature (Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, G. B. Shaw, Oscar Wilde and others) 6. The gothic novel and the aesthetics of the uncanny; translations of world literature in the publishing house Odeon 7. Romanticism in French literature 8. Realism and naturalism in French literature 9. The Modern Breakthrough in Scandinavia (1860 –1890). From the Norwegian national awakening to critical realism and naturalism 10. The modernist novel and the interwar period in American literature 11. German literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries 12. Significant figures in Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries 13. Prague German literature 14. Spanish literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries

- Teaching methods

- Assessment: A test in the e-learning system. In order to pass, students need to score at least 60% in the test.
