- Course objectives
- The course aims at providing students with a critical-philological approach to ancient texts. Sometimes we will work on unpublished texts or first-hand material (manuscripts or early prints).
It is strongly advised that students of this course should attend also the coursze of Filologia Italiana I / Textual Criticism I or study a good manual of Italian textual criticism (Alfredo Stussi, Pasquale Stoppelli, Paolo Chiesa, or Alberto Varvaro). Students must know the meaning of the following concepts: source, form, multiple forms, authorial variants, fortune, reception, transmission, tradition, critical edition
Since the course mostly consists in reading and explaining excerpts of literary works which are part of the exam, you are kindly invited to print them on paper. - Syllabus

- Reading of ancient Italian texts (a selection of pieces from the first centuries of Italian literature). Aspects of the historical development of the language and historical grammar. Aspects of Italian textual criticism. Fundaments of manuscript and early print studies.

- Teaching methods
- Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of a presentation the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a concrete text.

- Analysis of a text in a seminar essay and a test.
