Course objectives
The main objective of the course are to introduce students to the languages of India (Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and isolated languages) and its geographical, lingvistical, cultural and historical background, including the sketch of structures of grammatic and phonemic systems with typological remarks.
Syllabus
  • - geographical and political borders of India - "Greater India" - religion and Indian selfconsiousness - non indo-european and indo-european languages of India - old cultural languages of India (sanskrit and prakrits) - "invasion" languages of India (Persic and Arabic) - towards modern languages (based on Hindi model) - sociolinquistical relations of Indian languages

Teaching methods
The teacher introduces the ethnic and cultural history and present of the area. The students presents their descriptions of the chosen important languages, including their literary context.
Assessment methods
Output is based on a description of a chosen language of the region, in the context of historical, geographical and political conditions.
