- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to offer basic insight into the evolution of Brazilian literature from its beginning (16th Century) to the end of the 19th Century. Seminars are oriented to analyses and interpretation of selected texts. Individual reading of participants is important.

- Program 1. 16th Century (origins and formation, informative text, Jesuitical literature) 2. Baroque („Brazilian Baroque“, poetry, prose, historiography, Academies) 3. Arcadism (Arcadia, Neoclassicism, Enlightenment, Preromanticism; lyrical and epical poetry) 4. Romanticism (3 stadiums of romantic poetry, prose: novels, theatre) 5. Realism (Machado de Assis, Raul Pompéia) 6. Naturalism (Aluísio Azevedo, Adolfo Caminha, Inglês de Sousa) 7. Parnassianism (Olavo Bilac, Alberto de Oliveira, Raimundo Correia) 8. Symbolism (Cruz e Sousa, Alphonsus de Guimaraens, Emiliano Perneta, Pedro Kilkerry)
