- Course objectives
- Lecture characterized Balkan states after 1945, paying attention to their man political, economic and cultural features, being focused also to mutual relationships among Balkan countries and their contacts with Czechoslovakia (pertinently the Czech Republic). It is concentrated to particular important aspects of the evolution of Balkan countries between 1950 - 1980. Causes of Yugoslavia breakup are emphasized, its course and consequences for broader region. At the end it is focused to current social and political evolution in Balkans (metamorphoses of Balkan political map, immanent evolution in particular countries, evolution of their culture, next perspectives of Balkan region). Finally, at the end of this course the student would be capable to understand and evaluate complicated political events in Balkans in the second half of 20th century objectively, being capable to interpret cause and consequences of events, resulting in Yugoslavia breakup and possibility of western Balkans.
- Syllabus
- Sovietization of Balkans. Consequences of civil war in Greece. Tito bust-up with Kominterna and Yugoslavian way out of blocks. Evolution in Bulgaria and Romania. Cyprus crisis and Greek – Turkish relationships. Yugoslavia heading the movement of independent states and its economic and political development among the blocks. Yugoslavia after Tito: arising of nationalism and Kosovo issue. Collapse of Soviet model in Balkans: coup d'état in Romania, Bulgarian way. Greece and European integration. Causes, course, and consequences of Yugoslavian break-up. Political development in Slovenia and Croatia. Civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia under UN protectorate. Serbian and Montenegro and their immanent political evolution. Kosovo crisis. Balkans at the turn point of millennium.
