Course objectives
After finishing the course students:
- are familiar with issues concerning the study of early Czech literature;
- understand basic terms and methods of research work;
- are able to work with main sources of information;
- are familiar with issues concerning the development, functions and genres of early Czech literature;
- are familiar with principles of interpretation of early Czech texts, also from the perspective of literary and general cultural contexts.
In the introductory lessons there will be presented the basic literature concerned by presenting and evaluating the syntheses of literary history in the 20th century. In following lectures the main "controversial" themes will be dealt with (e.g. the love lyric poetry of the Middle Ages, medieval legends, genre system of Renaissance literature, the understanding of Baroque literature, the importance of J.A. Komenský, artistic value of Baroque homiletics).

  • - Renaissance books of travel as a sign of the changing ideas of the era
  • - Komenský between humanism and Baroque
  • - homiletics as a basic genre of Baroque literature
  • - questions around Baroque legends
  • - folk and semi-folk literature of the 18th century

Teaching methods
The lecture uses mainly the method of presentation, analysis and application of theoretical knowledge during instructive interpretations of selected texts.
Assessment methods
The colloquium is assessed by the lecturers, on the basis of a written test, drawing on the presented topics.
