Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present the birth of towns and the urban community and the administrative institutions arising in them, both self-governing and lordly. It then goes on to describe the development of municipal administration and changes in it which were brought about by historical twists and turns such as Hussitism, the Reformation, post-White Mountain development and Theresian and Josephine reforms up to Stadion’s provisional municipal system, which newly established municipal administration on the civic principle of progress.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- characterize the main principles for the establishment of an urban community and the Medieval network of towns;
- describe the important milestones in the administrative development of towns from the 10th-19th centuries;
- analyse the level of growth and weakness of the sovereign element of urban administration and the autonomous element of urban administration;
- describe how a town’s main administrative bodies operated;
- name and chronologically order the main changes in urban administration;
- assess the benefits of administrative reform in the transition to a modern state organisation;
