- Course objectives
- The course presents a basic geographic, political, social and economic characteristics of the Balkan Peninsula and the countries in Southeastern Europe (Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Greece). On successful completion of the course student will acquire necessary knowledge and arguing skill on the ethnic and linguistic structure of the population, life and institutions of these countries as well as their cultural specifics. In this way he acquires a complex overview of the whole Southeastern Europe.

- Historical and cultural characteristics of the Balkans, nations and ethnic groups in the Balkans, religious map of the Balkans;
- Geographic, administrative, historical, political, social and cultural characteristics of Croatia; Bosnia and Hercegovina; Montenegro; Serbia; Bulgaria; Romania; Macedonia; Albania; Kosovo; Greece and Cyprus.

- Lectures, home reading, class discussion.
- Assessment methods
- The course consists of thematically autonomous lectures of several Balkan scholars. Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. There is going to be the final written exam, which concentrates on the student’s knowledge of the studied countries as well as the Balkans as a historically and culturally distinct region of Europe.
