- Course objectives
- The main purpose of the course is to provide the student with information about various characteristic features and aspects of ancient Greek society and its evolution from the Mycenaean to the Classical period of history.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course the student:
- will enrich his/her knowledge from previous lectures of important aspects of ancient Greek history;
- will be able to apply the acquired knowledge also outside the academic soil in everyday life (e. g. while guiding tourists in Greece etc.). - Syllabus
- 1. Mycenenan palace architecture - the megaron.
- 2. Housing of the Greek elites during the Dark age.
- 3. Trade in the Dark age and the Archaic period.
- 4. Selected aspects of the Second Greek colonization.
- 5. The oracle of Delphi, its Lydian connection and Greek tyrants.
- 6. The notion of honor and its impact on warfare and diplomacy in the Archaic and Classic period.
- 7. Greek coins as a source.
- 8. Classical Greek temples.
- 9. Olympic games.
- 10. The development of Greek painted pottery.
