- SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS- ALL HELD IN THE ROOM A 21: 9. 10. 2017: 15,50-18,20 + discussion 10. 10. 2017: 15,50-18,20 + discussion 12. 10. 2017: 10,50 - 12,25 and 15,50-18,20 MONDAY 1) The term “risk”. Why modern risk research does not consider antiquity and medieval age. Risk and fatum. Rolling the dice as the root of risk research. The dice in antiquity as a metaphor of risky situations. How to calculate probability in antiquity? Approaches to a risk research on Roman antiquity; the variety of the sources.
- 2) Health risks: Sources of occupational risks and diseases. Indices of a reflected ancient perspective. TUESDAY 3) Ex voto: the prevention of risks with the help of the gods.
- 4) Unconditional and conditional communication with ancient gods: The formulation donum dedit in Latin sacred inscriptions. A first systematic analysis and comparison with votive inscriptions (votum/ex voto) THURSDAY 4) Natural disasters: Sources of earthquakes, floods, famine and preventive measures. Prevention in construction.
- 5) Risks in seafaring and ancient economy. The variety of measures in a central field of ancient life. From risk-minimizing contracts to ‘magical’ practices.
