Course objectives
The aim of the course is to examine knowledge of basic Latin grammar. The course is intended for Ph.D. students of Slavic languages.
Learning outcomes
A student should be able to:
grammatically describe verbal and nominal forms and create them;
translate short sentences into Czech;
identify basic types of Latin subordinate clauses.
Syllabus
  • 1st – 4th conjugation verbs (verbs of type capio included), the verb esse and its compounds.
  • Forms of present stem (present, imperfect and future indicative, present and imperfect subjunctive, imperative, present infinitive).
  • Forms of perfect stem (perfect, plusquamperfect, future perfect indicative, perfect and plusquamperct subjunctive, perfect and future infinitives ).
  • Supine.
  • Present, perfect, future participle, their formation, declention, meaning and use.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 1st – 5th declension nouns.
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd declension adjectives.
  • Formation of adverbs.
  • Gradation of adjectives and adverbs (regular, irregular, periphrastic), comparison.
  • Personal, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns (hic, is, ille, ipse, idem), interrogatiove, relative, negative pronouns (nemo, nihil).
  • Basic prepositions.
  • Double accusative and nominative constructions.
  • Accusative with infinitive.
  • Nominative with infinitive.
  • Relative clauses.
  • Function of subjunctives in the main clause (especially for expressing wishes).
  • Complement directive clauses, final clauses (ut / ne clauses), temporal clauses with cum historicum and cum iterativum, conditional clauses.
  • Causal clauses after quod, quia.
  • Complement interrogative clauses, sequence of tenses.
  • Ablative absolute.
  • Cardinal and ordinal numerals 1–100, 1000 and formation of numerals for thousands).
  • Gerundive (for expressing necessity with esse) and gerund.
