Course objectives
A profile course of the minor study plan of the M.A. study programme of Czech studies and of the study plan aimed at future teachers. Its aim is to present summarizing as well as advanced information on significant aspects of studying Czech language and on key areas of Czech studies from the linguistic point of view. Special attention is paid to topics dealt with within the research work carried out at the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University and at partner sections of The Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., located in Brno.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able to:
- get orientated in issues of synchronic and diachronic description of Czech as a mother tongue (alternatively: as their other/foreign language), with the focus on topics within the research work carried out at the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University;
- get orientated in selected linguistic sub-disciplines (e.g. in dialectology, onomastics, computer linguistics, teaching Czech as a foreign language);
- deal practically with more difficult issues of orthography and of language codification, they will be able to do so on the basis of work with recommended sources;
- work with traditional as well as with electronic handbooks and with other sources providing basic information on Czech;
- notice, on the basis of the acquired knowledge, points of interest in the language of everyday practical communication and to find their explanations.

  • 6. History and present-day situation of Czech lexicography, dictionaries of Czech.
  • 7. Onomastics – the system and development of Czech proper names.
  • 8. Structure of Czech I
  • 9. Structure of Czech II
  • 10. Structure of Czech III
  • 11. Pragmalinguistics - speech acts, principles of dialogue, strategies of politeness.
  • 12. Computer and corpus processing of Czech.
  • 13. Language acquisition, teaching Czech as a foreign language.

Teaching methods
A series of lectures, discussions with students.
Assessment methods
The course ends with a colloquium passed on the basis of a discussion on a (previously drawn) topic corresponding with the contents of lectures and with topics for final state exams. To complete the course successfully, active participation in lectures is also necessary.
