Course objectives
The aim of the course is to outline the development of Italian literature from the 13th to the 16th century. Students will be acquainted with the work of prominent authors of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- identify and describe important features of major periods of Italian literature history;
- perceive the history of Italian literature in the context of the history of Italian and European culture;
- describe the main features of important works by Italian authors of the Middle Ages and Renaissance;
- apply basic literary concepts;
- analyse literary texts in terms of form and content;
- identify individual literary genres and understand their development;
Syllabus
  • The core of the course consists in the explanation and discussion of texts by key writers from the very beginning to the end of the 16th century.
  • - Literary genres in the 13th century, Dante.
  • - Petrarca, Boccaccio and the 14th century.
  • - Poetry and prose during Humanism and Renaissance; Classicism, the codification of the literary language.
  • - Ariosto. Machiavelli.
  • - Italian theatre of the 16th century.
  • - Mannerism, Tasso.
  • Required reading: Francesco d`Assisi: Il cantico di frate sole; Marco Polo: Il Milione; Dante Alighieri: Inferno; Francesco Petrarca: Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (Canzoniere); Giovanni Boccaccio: Decameron; Baldassar Castiglione: Il libro del cortigiano; Ludovico Ariosto: Orlando furioso (raccontato da Italo Calvino); Niccolò Machiavelli: Principe + Mandragola; Torquato Tasso: La Gerusalemme liberata.
