- Course objectives
- Course description: Training in practical techniques of cleaning, conservation and restoration of archaeological artefacts, especially ceramics, but also metals and organic materials. The basics of drawing.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to:
- identify the type of ceramic material and the method of its processing, the type of firing, the type of decoration and the application procedure;
- collect and clean fragments, inventory, record, glue and mend fragments;
- identify the type of metal and the appropriate conservation procedure. - Syllabus
- (1-8: one-week workshop in Panská Lhota; 9-14: practical laboratory training in the Arne Nováka St.; 15: excursion to a professional conservation department of the Institute of Archaeological Heritage Brno)
- 1. Introduction to the problem and basics of conservation methods for archaeology students.
- 2. Conservation of iron artefacts and artefacts from non-ferrous metals.
- 3. Conservation of artefacts from organic and problematic materials.
- 4. Conservation of pottery and artefacts from precious metals.
- 5.-8. Practical laboratory tuition in conservation of metal artefacts and assessment of the workshop results.
- 9.-10. Practical laboratory training: washing and drying of ceramic fragments, gluing, mending and colouring of pottery.
- 11.-12. Practical laboratory training: casting of small objects, preparation of moulds and plaster, moulding.
- 13.-14. Practical laboratory training: the principles of processing of prehistoric finds, their classification and registration within individual settlement features.
- 15. Excursion to a professional conservation department of the Institute of Archaeological Heritage organised at the end of the term, where the students will be familiarised with conservation practice in an archaeological institution specialised in rescue research.
