Course objectives
The course (Fall 2020) is devoted to the reading and the critical interpretation of Eugenio Montale’s poetic work, as included in L’opera in versi. Attention will be expecially paid to Montale’s first three poetry collections, Ossi di seppia, Le Occasioni and La bufera e altro. The teacher will introduce students to the Montale’s ideological, stylistic and linguistic strategies and to his criticism. In order to achieve a complete understanding of some fundamental topics in Montale’s poetics, excerpts from his proses, including Farfalla di Dinard, Auto da fé and Il secondo mestiere, Scritti sull’arte and Prime alla scala will be read in class.
Learning outcomes
Students will become acquinted with the work of one of the most important Italian poet of the 20th century, while they will be provided with the analytical tools valuable in analysis of poetic texts. Students will become familiar with Montale’s poetics and stylistic choices, such as the use of correlativo oggettivo, the recurrence of some poetic images, the use of a specific vocabulary, and with author’s relationship with major Italian and European currents and writers. In addition, the study of Le Occasioni and La bufera e altro will also be an occasion for students to explore the tumultuous history of 1930s and 1940s in Italy, while the reading of some excerpts of Montale’s prose will allow them to explore 20th century Italian arts and society.

Teaching methods
The course will be conducted in Italian. Montale’s work will be read in Italian. Students will receive weekly assignments and will be expected to actively participate in the class discussion. Poems will be read t home, and they will be discussed in class. The teacher will make sure that all the readings will be properly understood in details. At the beginning of each lesson students will be asked to paraphrase Montale’s poems previously assigned, discuss poetics, recurring themes, and stylistic choices in the poems previously read at home.
