Course objectives
The aim of the subject’s instruction is to acquaint the students with the history of legal professions (advocate, notary public, court bailiff) in the Czech lands. Attention will be devoted to the legal regulations, setting the performance of these professions from the Middle Ages to the present, the method of the execution of these professions in the individual periods, formation of the status of advocates, notaries and court bailiffs and their estate self-goverments (professional chambers) and finally selected personalities, who performed these professions in the past and stood out also in social, political and cultural life. The individual themes will be conceived according to the periodization of the development of these legal professions.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the subject, the student will be able to define the basic terms and institutions connected with the execution of legal professions (independence, obligation of confidentiality, principle of numerus clausus), describe the development of the individual legal professions from the Middle Ages to the present, analyse the differences of the reasons for the distinctions of the professions of advocate, notary public and court bailiff and their roles within the wider justice system and explicate the utility of the knowledge of the history of these professions for understanding their current position within the democratic legal state.

  • 4. Advocacy and notary offices in the Czech lands in 1781–1848.
  • 5. Advocacy and notary offices in the Czech lands in 1848–1918, their role in then Bohemian civil society.
  • 6. Advocacy and notary offices in the First Czechoslovak Republic.
  • 7. Advocacy and notary offices in the Czech lands in 1938–1948.
  • 8. Advocacy and notary offices in the Czechoslovak Repubulic in the period of the so-called Legal Two-Year Plan.
  • 9. Advocacy in the period of political trials and notary offices at the time of their nationalization.
  • 10. Advocacy and notary offices in the 1960s.
  • 11. Advocacy and notary offices in the period of Normalization.
  • 12. Advocacy, notary offices and the profession of court bailiff (executor) after 1989.
