Course objectives
The course offers an overview of the history of ethics from pre-history to the end of Middle Ages. The goal is to provide students with information about the basic questions, problems, works, branches and ethicists of the era.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn how to interpret key moral and philosophical attitudes in the era on the basis of selected source literature.
Syllabus
  • What is ethics, history of ethics? Methodology of history of ethics. The origins of morality, genealogy of morality, moral facts, values. Prehistoric, archaic societies and ancient cultures: Egyptian Book of the Dead, Ancient Codes, Homer, Hesiodos. Ancient ethics: Heraclitus, Democritus, Socrates, Plato, Sophists. Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics Ethics of the Stoics and Skeptics. Ethics of the Epicureans and Kynics. Comparison of ancient and medieval ethics, Augustine: Confessions, On Lying, On Mercy and Free Will Peter Abaelard Thomas Aquinas

Teaching methods
Lectures, colloquiums, discussions on primary sources, readings, homework.
Assessment methods
Credit received on the basis of written test - required knowledge of primary literature. Test consisting of 10 open-questions, minimum pass level 60%.
