Course objectives
The course consists of the preparation of the upcoming issue of Re:Views (for issues to date see www.reviewsmagazine.net). Re:Views Magazine is a registered online periodical with its own ISSN number (2464-7306). It is published fully in English and is closely associated with the Department of English and American Studies, whose students are the editorial board Re:Views Magazine, z.s. run. The aim of this course is to introduce students to running a student magazine. The course will cover practical aspects ranging from doing PR or writing individual articles to "behind the scenes" aspects of a student magazine like following publishing ethics or securing financing.
Syllabus
  • Biweekly sessions: Week 1 (September 19th – September 25th, 2022): About us: Who are we? What do we do? Who are our partners? Who are our sponsors? Week 2 (October 3rd – October 9th, 2022): How to write an article – selecting a topic, writing research questions, structuring an article Week 3 (October 17th – October 23rd, 2022): How to conduct an interview? Week 4 (October 31st – November 6th, 2022): How to lead a student magazine – legal aspects (student organisation, ISSN…), personnel, scholarships, the role of student clubs at the university, leadership, PR&MR, social media marketing. Week 5 (November 21st – November 27th, 2022): Time management – writing. Preparing for publication – colour-coding (for formatting purposes), writing a profile. Week 6 (December 5th – December 11th, 2022): Sources, databases, open science, open access. Teaching methods
This is a biweekly course with assignments in the in-between weeks. The lectures will introduce students to the necessities of working in a student magazine, including leadership, time management, writing an article, working in PR and MR and more.
Assessment methods
For the credit, a student must produce an article or contribute in other ways to the successful publication of the upcoming issue of Re:Views. The course will be finalised by a final discussion over the final project. The teachers and students will receive feedback on the work and course topics from each other. Class attendance is compulsory.
