The knowledge of basic English linguistics terminology (e.g., adjectives, determiners, case, number, aspect, sibilants, syllables, relative clauses, subject, object, ...)

Course objectives
The main goal of this course is to provide the students with an overview of the basic topics, approaches and results of typological research into language structure.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to:
- understand the basic concepts and methods of typological research
- interpret typological generalizations from the perspective of various theories
- develop and conduct their own typological research
- use online databases in order to verify linguistic univrsals

  • Basic issues in typology: is it possible compare languages, and if so, how?
  • Greenberg's universals and what they can tell us about human language
  • functional and formal approaches to language universals
  • word-order universals
  • morphological universals
  • phonological universals
  • tools in typology (WALS, SSWL, ...)

Teaching methods
Lecture, discussion.
Assessment methods
For a passing grade, I require attendance (75 percent) and a class presentation on a selected topic. For the presentation, students read two articles and present their main findings to their fellow colleagues. The ideal presentation takes about 15 minutes and presents the most important information as clearly as possible.
