- Course objectives
- This course deals with the German literary drama of the 20th century. The students get acquainted with the basis of the so-called modern drama in the lectures and during seminars. This knowledge is further developed and used in the analysis of concrete plays. The teacher always provides an introduction to a given topic and the students try to find out the central motives in the analysed plays and they trace the similarities and differences. At the end of this course the students should be able to orientate themselves in the issues of the German theatre of the 20th century. They are able to understand the main features of this theatre and explain the background of single plays. They are also able to provide concrete examples from the given plays for their arguments. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: take ones bearings im Drama of the 20th Century. Theses, which this will be check up. A. Verwandtschaften über Jahrzehnte hinweg: 1. A. Fleißer: Ingolstadt.., Das neue Volksstück: Sperr: Die Jagdszenen aus Bayern. 5. H. Von Hofmannsthal: Der Tor und der Tod, M. Frisch: Die Biographie 6. G. Kaiser: Von morgen bis Mitternacht, B. Strauss: Gross und klein. B. Judenfrage, Kriegsreflexion: 1. F. Wolf: Profesor Mammlock, M. Frisch: Andorra, Biedermann und die Brandstifter. 2. W. Borchert: Draußen vor der Tür, C. Zuckmayer: Des Teufels General 3. M. Walser: Der schwarze Schwan, M. Frisch: Nun singen sie wieder. 4. R. Hochhuth: Stellvertetrer, P. Weiss: Die Ermittlung 5. R. W. Fassbinder: ..G. Tabori: Die Kannibalen, Mutters Courage, Mein Kampf.

- Student will be able to describe the crucial trends in the germanspeking theatre, to analyze the main transformations and to interprete the primare texts.

- The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.

- The student will get the credit if he/she gives an oral presentation of a selected topic.
