- Course objectives
- In this course, students are introduced to a number of essential facts about the Netherlands, covering various fields: geography, politics, media, culture, etc. Every class focuses on a certain topic. Main objective of this course is that students not only acquire basic knowledge about the Netherlands, but also require insight in the historic (and geographic) interwovenness with contemporary phenomena.

- Acquiring knowledge about different aspects of Dutch society
Being able to situatie important historical events and figures
Gaining (historical) insight into current phenomena and debates
Reading and paraphrasing Dutch texts about society and history
Formulating their opinion on (current) themes in Dutch - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- A combination of lecture and seminar (two hours per week); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities and student-centered learning activities will be employed. In preparation for the lectures, students learn vocabulary around a specific theme and read texts from the Canon of the Netherlands (de Canon van Nederland).
- Assessment methods
- Weekly preparation of 3 tasks (= condition participation exam):
(1) vocabulary around a certain topic
(2) preparation text “Canon van Nederland”
(3) preparation of second text “Canon van Nederland” OR alternative assignment
