Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make the students familiar with main traditional as well as modern, alternative approaches used in Indo-European studies in general and in the analysis of the sound development of Greek.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will know the basic terminology of diachronic linguistics. They will be able to describe the sound development of Greek from its Indo-European roots up to the Classical period with the help of various methods of historical and historical-comparative linguistics. They will be acquainted with the history of approaches to the development of Greek.
Syllabus
  • 1. Diachronic vs. synchronic approach to language, family-tree theory vs. wave theory of the development of Indo-European languages.
  • 2. General issues of Indo-European studies, Indo-European homeland hypotheses, the question of the separation of Greek from the Indo-European dialectal continuum.
  • 3. Criteria for the periodization of languages, the periodization of Greek.
  • 4. Contact of languages in distant past, Indo-European and Non-Indo-European substrate and adstrate in Greek.
  • 5. Indo-European system of consonants, glottalic theory.
  • 6. Laryngeal theory and its development, the reflexes of laryngeals in Greek.
  • 7. Indo-European velars and their development in Greek, satem vs. centum languages, Grassmann´s law.
  • 8. Indo-European "s" and its development in Greek, the question of s-mobile.
  • 9. Indo-European sonorants (liquids, nasals and semivowels) and their development in Greek, the question of Greek digamma.
  • 10. Indo-European labials and dentals and their development in Greek.
  • 11. Indo-European system of vowels and syllabic sonorants, their development in Greek.
  • 12. The main tendencies of the Greek vowel and consonant development during antiquity (monophthongization, contraction, compensatory lengthening, spirantization).
