Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present the historical development of Taiwan from early settlement in prehistoric times to modern history up to the end of the 20th century. In particular, the course will emphasize the 19th and 20th centuries, when Taiwan experienced major political and cultural changes.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- identify and summarize the important features of the major periods of Taiwanese history;
- identify and describe major historical milestones in Taiwanese history and their historical interpretations;
- describe the factors of Taiwanese history that currently influence contemporary politics, such as the issue of Taiwan's independence;

  • 1. Introduction: geography, name origin, Prehistoric settlement of Taiwan and Australasian ethnicity
  • 2) Formosa and the colonial powers: Dutch occupation of Taiwan, Spanish occupation of Taiwan, Dutch colonization
  • 3) Taiwan under the Qing
  • 4) The British in Taiwan and the first Asian republic
  • 5) Japanese colonization: military control, modernization, war years, Japanese legacy in Taiwan
  • 6) Taiwan after World War II: Incident 228 and the White Terror
  • 7) Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan in the 1950s
  • 8) Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan in the 1960s
  • 9) Era of Chiang Ching-kuo: economic prosperity
  • 10) 1980s: democratization
  • 11) 1990s: Democracy under Lee Teng-hui
  • 12) The lost decade: independence or annexation?, building democracy
