Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the Hebrew alphabet and its origin, especially on the cultural-historical background of the ancient Middle East. During the lessons, the students will get acquainted with dictionaries of Biblical Hebrew, scientific textbooks, overviews of Hebrew grammar and electronic aids. Simple vocabulary and morphological and syntactic structures will be emphasized. Another goal is to translate short literary texts with the help of a dictionary. Another goal is to get acquainted with the different types of Hebrew Bibles and dictionaries that will enable students to acquire a basic orientation in the biblical text.
Learning outcomes
Based on the acquired knowledge of morphology, syntax and textology, the student will be able to interpret short texts, especially the first 5 books of the Bible.
Syllabus
  • The lessons will be divided into grammar and literature parts. Parts of the course will also take place in a flipped classroom format. The instructor will provide an audio recording in advance, and the classes will discuss particularly challenging passages of biblical texts. -alphabeth -vocalization marks -difference between open and closed syllables -punctuation -dimensional consonants -laryngeals -article -inseparable suffixes -word types in  biblical Hebrew -names in  singular -dual -interrogative pronouns -status constructus and status absolutus -appropriative suffixes -personal pronouns -verba
Teaching methods
The class will include an explanation of the Hebrew alphabet and its historical background, basic Biblical Hebrew grammar using simple passages, reading and explanation of individual concepts and putting them into practice. Classes will include frequent discussion and group work with translations.
Assessment methods
Preparation for lessons (interpretation of texts, short translations, reading materials), listening to audio-visual materials.
