Knowledge of basic grammar and lexicon of classical Latin. This subject is offered only to students who are not enrolled in the Master's programme of Italian studies. It corresponds to the first half of the subject History of Italian language I and thus, for students of Italian studies, it is already included in the latter. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide insight into the development of Latin during first centuries of our era, and to point to tendencies related to the development of Romance languages. Thus, the course gives students the opportunity to observe with their own eyes unique story of the change and vitality of the language. The starting point for the observation of the development towards Romance languages is Classical Latin, the essentials of which were acquired by students in their previous studies.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
- sketch development of Latin in the fields of phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicon with emphasis on Vulgar and Late Latin;
- show relation between selected Late Latin evolutionary tendencies and the development of the Romance languages (mainly Italian, and Spanish);
- explain some basic principles related to the development of language and language changes.

- Vulgar Latin:
- Introduction.
- Concepts of Vulgar and Late Latin and their definition.
- Romanization and the Romance languages.
- Changes in the vocalic and consonantic systems.
- Nominal system: changes in declension, gradation of adjectives, changes in pronouns, origin of the article.
- Theory of grammaticalization.
- Verbal system: development of new forms (future, perfect), extinction of some classical forms, changes in verbal voice.
- Syntax: accusative with infinitive, quod clauses, absolute constructions, indirect questions, word order.
- Lexicon: semantic changes, Greek loan-words.

- Lectures, work with selected examples taken from Late Latin texts - identification of selected language changes.
- Assessment methods
- The exam includes the complete programme of the subject such as provided in the lectures held during the semester (including lectures given by guest lecturers, and references to topics covered in the previous semester if the subject has the number II in its title) and in a manual on the subject to choose from among those listed. The final grade will also take into account the work done by students during the semester and their active participation in the course.
Attendance is compulsory.
Maximum number of unjustified absences: 2. Late arrival, i.e. when the lecture has already started, will be marked as an absence. Doing other things, not relevant to the subject, during the classes (such as chatting, reading/sending email, browsing the internet, watching films/videos) will also be considered as an absence.
Arriving late at the exam may result in non-admission to the exam. - Language of instruction

- The subject will be taught in Italian language. Though, students enrolled in study programmes other than Italian studies can take the exam in Spanish, Catalan, French or eventually English.
