Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the essentials of interpreter training, based on the premise that students will work outside class time on a regular basis. Homework in ELF will be supervised by an experienced teacher. The classes will be taught by a practising interpreter whose expertise will make it possible for the students to get professional feedback and information about the situation on the market. A good working knowledge of both Czech and English is a prerequisite for attending the course.
Learning outcomes
The student will have learned to:
- prepare for an interpreting assignment efficiently;
- manage stress in simultaneous interpreting;
- split attention in simultaneous interpreting and develop a reliable habit of this;
- use various coping mechanisms to deal with interpreting issues across a range of topics
; - negotiate about interpreting jobs.

  • Week 1 – Introduction: how to practise, practice material, preparation (1st topic) Week 2 – Consecutive Interpreting: Active listening and recall Week 3 – General knowledge, self-monitoring Week 4 – Delivery Week 5 – Improving the passive language: 2nd topic Week 6 – Reformulation, feedback Week 7 – Split attention, sight translation: 3rd topic Week 8 – Simultaneous interpreting Week 9 – Improving the active language, workshop Week 10 – Ear-Voice Span, feedback Week 11 – Stress management: 4th topic Week 12 – Exam
