- Course objectives
- As it is commonly known, the Czechs and the Slovaks usually understand each other well, thanks to the close relation of their languages. However, there are also disadvantages of this close relation: when people face the necessity to express themselves in the language of their neighbours – in its standard form and without mistakes - they find out this task is not easier than in any other foreign language, that even the opposite is true. If you are facing this problem as well and are interested in improving in Czech, this course is aimed just at you. Opening the course meets requirements of Masaryk University students and teachers, who have considered this issue very topical and have been missing a course of this kind so far. The course is aimed at all Slovak full-time study mode students at the Masaryk University, who need to gain the capability of cultivated communication in Standard Czech for the purpose of their study duties as well as for their future professional career. The course is also open to Czech students interested in the relationship of Czech and Slovak (in this respect, the course contents is close to CJA37 – The Slovak Language). Having passed this course successfully, students are able to get orientated in present-day Standard Czech, are able to express themselves in an oral as well as in a spoken form using Standard Czech, to differentiate among style variations and to create easily a Czech text in accordance with norms of the standard language or to translate a Slovak text into Czech.
- Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able: - to get orientated in codification of present-day Standard Czech; - to express themselves using Standard Czech in written and oral communication; - to make a differentiation among stylistic varieties; - to produce a Czech text in accordance with the norms of standard language or to translate a Slovak text into Czech.
- Syllabus
- Classes are based on a contrastive Czech-Slovak approach and focus on specific features determined by the close relation of these languages. The focus is especially on issues causing problems to Slovaks, namely on differences in orthography and pronunciation as well as on selected issues form the spheres of morphology and syntax, to style variations and to words typically causing problems in communication.
