- The knowledge of basic English linguistics terminology (e.g., adjectives, determiners, case, number, aspect, sibilants, syllables, relative clauses, subject, object).

- Course objectives
- The main goal of this course is to provide the students with an overview of the basic topics, approaches and results of typological research into language structure.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will be able to:
- understand the basic concepts and methods of typological research
- interpret typological generalizations from the perspective of various theories
- develop and conduct their own typological research
- use online databases in order to verify linguistic univresals - Syllabus
- Basic issues in typology: is it possible compare languages, and if so, how?
- Greenberg's universals and what they can tell us about human language
- functional and formal approaches to language universals
- word-order universals
- morphological universals
- phonological universals
- tools in typology (WALS, Terraling)
- languages of the world

- Teaching methods
- The methods used include lecture, class discussion; reading assigned materials.
- Assessment methods
- For a passing grade, I require (i) attendance (2 absences allowed), (ii) a class presentation on a selected topic and (iii) passing the final test (one has to have at least 2/3 answers right to pass). The presentations and the final test will be in English just like the entire course.
