Prerequisites
The knowledge of basic English linguistics terminology (e.g., adjectives, determiners, case, number, aspect, sibilants, syllables, relative clauses, subject, object).

Course objectives
The main goal of this course is to provide the students with an overview of the basic topics, approaches and results of typological research into language structure.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to:
- understand the basic concepts and methods of typological research
- interpret typological generalizations from the perspective of various theories
- develop and conduct their own typological research
- use online databases in order to verify linguistic univresals

  • Basic issues in typology: is it possible compare languages, and if so, how?
  • Greenberg's universals and what they can tell us about human language
  • functional and formal approaches to language universals
  • word-order universals
  • morphological universals
  • phonological universals
  • tools in typology (WALS, Terraling)
  • languages of the world

Teaching methods
The methods used include lecture, class discussion; reading assigned materials.
Assessment methods
For a passing grade, I require (i) attendance (2 absences allowed), (ii) a class presentation on a selected topic and (iii) passing the final test (one has to have at least 2/3 answers right to pass). The presentations and the final test will be in English just like the entire course.
