Course objectives
The aim of the course is to show the different theoretical approaches to the category of time and their application to literary texts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to analyze literary texts, particularly the different modalities of temporality and narrative strategies. This theoretical knowledge can be applied to the analysis of the master's thesis.
Syllabus
  • The lecture will be combined with seminar work on selected theoretical and literary texts. The focus will be on modern prose. 1. Physical, biological and psychological time. Time in human cultures. 2. Grammatical time, the expression of time, space-time deixis, "temps du discours" and "temps du récit" in French (Benveniste, Genette, Maingueneau) 3. Time and the narrator: Diderot, Balzac, Gide, Céline. 4. Time and space in myth and in the novel: Lévi-Strauss, Tournier. 5. The representation of time: Proust. 6. Subjectification of time: Le Clézio. 7. Time, space and the narrator in the theatre: Ionesco, Beckett.
