Course objectives
The course is focused on the interpretation of the fundamental problems of Lithuanian medieval history. It concentrates on the emergence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the formation and the gradual enforcement of the central power of the Grand Duke, expansion of the territory of the Russian principalities and its consequences. Great attention is given to the church and religious history, which reflect the deft and very successful policy of the Lithuanian rulers of the second half of the 13th and 14th centuries, which i.a. characterize the very interesting relationships with the European sovereigns. It captures the relationship between the Lithuanian and Muscovite Grand Duchies and introduces the vital role of Lithuania in the history of medieval Eastern Europe.
