Course objectives
Methods and various approaches towards musical analysis.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to: 1) identify and explain main approaches of musical analysis 2) define individual periods regarding structure of the musical language 3) analyse instrumental music
Syllabus
  • The seminar is structured into twelve sessions with an emphasis on instrumental music from approximately 1500 to the present. In each of the lessons, compositions analogous to the technology of that piece are inserted in addition to compositions of that era across history - to give students the opportunity to understand the flow of artistic development across the history of music. Emphasis is placed on a comprehensive analysis of the composition, including cross-curricular context (continuities in literature and the visual arts). Students come into contact with the score of the work and the sound recording and, in addition to harmonic and formal analysis, have the opportunity to discuss the semantic aspects of the compositions, their historical/biographical context, as well as tectonics, their attachment to a particular artistic movement, and other structural elements of the scores (texture, ductus, melodicism, rhythmicity, notation, etc.). Outline: 1 bicinia, Frescobaldi - toccata 2 D. Scarlatti, F. Jiránek - sonata, concerto 3 J.S. Bach, Handel - fugues 4 Sweelinck, Vivaldi - variations 5 C. Ph. E. Bach - fantasia 6 Haydn, Beethoven - string quartets 7 Rejcha - wind quintet, classical sonata 8 Romanticism / Neo-Romanticism - shifts in form and style 9 Mahler, Suk 10 Ravel, Debussy, Scriabin, Enescu 11 Prokofiev, Ives, Varése 12 Messiaen, Crumb. Schnittke
