- Course objectives
- Medieval Latin is a historical, cultural and linguistic phenomenon that is a direct successor of Latin language and literature of Classical antiquity. The course aims at introducing the students to basics of this continuity as well as to detailed explanations of selected phenomena.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course studens will be able to:
- explain the continuity between Classical and medieval Latin;
- point out the main characteristics of development of Medieval Latin;
- describe the forms of Medieval Latin prose and poetry;
- evaluate the importance of the Bible for Medieval Latin literature;
- apply the information about medieval primary sources and scholarly literature in their further studies. - Syllabus
- LECTURE:
- 1. Definition and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
- 2.-3. History of Medieval Latin studies.
- 4.-6. Constitutive elements of Medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Christian Latin).
- 7.-8. Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin.
- 9. Status of the Latin language in the late Roman Empire.
- 10.-11. Forms and genres of Medieval Latin prose.
- 12.-13. Forms of Medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythm-metrical poetry).

- Lecture and seminar: individual topics are illustrated on practical examples; students read selected Latin texts as well as primary sources (mastering basics of working with old prints and medieval manuscripts).

- Regular attendance and active class participation (attenadance min. 75%); presentation of a selected text; fulfillment of continuous assignements.
