- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to present the problems of studying, interpreting and translating Medieval Latin literature based on a particular text. The course has a particular subject of the most famous medieval collection of secular poetry, the Carmina Burana (12th century). The content and formal variety of individual pieces of this collection offer a comprehensive idea about the prime phase of development of medieval secular poetry.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- appreciate the state-of-the-art of the research into the Carmina Burana collection;
- understand the linguistic features of this literary corpus;
- analyze the prosody and interpret the content of individual pieces of this literary corpus.
As a result, students will acquire deeper understanding of the specific features of medieval Latin literature, such as the choice and meaning of the so-called auctoritates in the literary output of medieval authors. - Syllabus

- Requirements: regular attendance in the course (min. 75%) and active participation in the class discussions; continuous reading of presented texts; written paper (translation with commentary).
