Basic knowledge of the history of the Arabs (at Mediterranean studies' undergraduate level) is presumed. No prior knowledge of Arabic is required.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the literary developments in the Arab world from their origins to the masterpieces of the classical period. The lectures will be dedicated to pre- and early Islamic poetry, early Islamic prose, as well as poetry and prose works during Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid and Mamluk Era. Students will become acquainted with the peculiarities of the Hispano-Arabic poetry, Arab folk literature and with major works of the Arab-Islamic scientific thought in the Middle Ages.
Students will read selected texts in Czech or Slovak translation.
Learning outcomes
Upon the completion of the course, students will have acquired competence in:
- identifying and characterizing the stages in the development of Arabic literature;
- situating major works of Arabic literature in their cultural and socio-historical context;
- acquire competence in the reading, analysis and interpretation of Arabic primary sources (poetry and prose);
- to present their own analysis in oral and written form and in a concise academic style through class discussion and a final essay.

Teaching methods
The course is taught through reading assignments and classroom lectures; the works are set in their cultural and historical context and discussed in some depth with full student participation. Selected texts are available in Study Materials.
Assessment methods
Ongoing assessment: reading texts, active participation in discussions on analysed texts.
Final examination: written test aimed at testing the student’s insight into the main topics explained and discussed during lectures.
