Course objectives
The nature and content of important poetical controversies in Czech literature of the 19th and 20th century. The poetical controversy will be distinguished from parody, travesty and medieval Streichgedicht. By pointing at interesting controversies between poets and poetic generations the course tries to motivate students in their interests in poetry. Different types of poetical controversy: some are dealing with "national faith", others are connected with the attitudes of different "generations", the third group is formed by controversies around philosophical issues.

  • 1-2. Expounding the terms, examples
  • 3-4. A brief look at the controversies during the National Enlightment (Kollár, Čelakovský, Mácha, Tyl, Rubeš, Havlíček)
  • 5. Neruda: "U nás". Neruda as an author of epigrams
  • 6. Conflict of the "Lumír Group" with the magazines Osvěta and Paleček, Krásnohorská vs. Vrchlický
  • 7. Svatopluk Čech: "Nevěřme nikomu" - J.V. Sládek: "Dosti nás"
  • 8. Machar and his poems reacting against the poetics of the "Lumír Group"
  • 9. Sova: "Odpověď Theodoru Mommsenovi"
  • 10. Gellner: Radosti života (esp. XIV, XV, XXX, XXXV) - S.K. Neumann: Štěstí života
  • 11-12. Theer: "V neděli v restauraci" (Všemu navzdory) - S.K. Neumann: Nové zpěvy
