- Course objectives
- The modern form of the authobiography arose from the pietistic confessions ("Erweckungsgeschichten"). Goethe emphasized the aesthetic aspects and the new drift of the occurences in the later perspective. In the 19th century the authors of autobiographies tried to maintain the the balance between the self-portrait en the portrait of their time. The witness, the allegations of facts were not infirmed yet. In the 20th century the process of writing becames more important because the writer missed the former confidence in truth and soul. He seeks his own identity. The autobiography by Thomas Bernhard has crossed the borderline between non-fiction and fiction.
