- Course objectives
- This course deals with American writing since the Second World War. This is a particularly rich period in American literature, including as it does many very well-known figures: to name only a few, Updike, Bellow, Roth, Oates, and Morrison in prose; Lowell, Ginsberg, Plath, Kinnell and Ashbery in poetry; Williams, Albee and Miller in drama. In addition, there are many exciting writers who are less known here, either because they are more recent, or because they are more experimental. This course will attempt to give a balanced selection of the most significant and interesting writers in the post-war period. Literature: Norton Anthology of American Literature, vol. II; T. Morrison, Sula.
